Seeing yourself for the first time

Today my almost four month little angel reached a milestone, I say it was a milestone because I believe it to be the very beginning of a part of a girls life that can lead her down several paths…the path to self loathing, the path to vanity or hopefully one of confidence and contentment. She recognized herself in the mirror for the first time.

Her reaction was amazing she actually cried and laughed at exactly the same time and seemed frightened yet mesmerized.
I kept pressing her perfect little nose and saying “beep”.

Eventually she calmed down enough to really enjoy it and I took the time to tell her how beautiful she is inside and out.

Something that I will have to reinforce in her many, many times as she grows up I am sure because even though she is beautiful she will probably never be happy with how she looks and we can thank society for that!

Positive reinforcement and self worth start at home even at four months old. I pray that things will have changed before my baby is old enough to worry about it but sadly I doubt they will.

Some homework for us all:

Never say “diet” always say “healthy eating”.
Don’t ever refer to yourself as being fat around your children.
Instill confidence from an early age.

Sadly behaviours are learned. Children are like sponges they soak everything up!

Remember, the “do as I say, not as I do” mentality just DOES NOT work!
